I don't know if you've noticed that the very first words you learned when you were a child were the names of animals... if you know the reason why, I'd be more than pleased you shared your ideas with us.
When you begin to learn a new language when you are older, the same thing happens. As a consequence, when you mention the word "fish" in English, everybody knows what it means. However the phrase "something fishy" is not always known. It probably comes from the fact that grabbing a fish in your hands might prove tricky because of the oily texture of its skin; or from its putrid odour when not as fresh as it should be. Therefore "fishy" meaning "suspecious".
